Most of the antebellum records of Hertford County, North Carolina, were destroyed by courthouse fires in 1830 and 1862. Although the county was created in 1759, very few of its eighteenth-century records survive. One of those few is the tax list for 1779. The list includes ninety-nine pages [three of them unnumbered], measuring approximately 7" x 91/2''. The last page is signed by Matthias Brickell and attested by Benjamin Wynns, Clerk of the Court. Five districts are covered, but their locations are not indicated. This transcription omits repetitive negative marks and line leaders. The list is preserved in the North Carolina State Archives, identified as General Assembly Papers, Tax List, Hertford County, 1779, stack file number G.A.30.1.
