The history of the Davenport name and family begins in this book with Orme de Davenport who was born circa 1086 in the township called Davenport, located in the Hundred of Northwich, County of Chester, England. The story of the American branch begins with the immigration of Reverend John Davenport, who was born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England in 1597. Driven out of England by religious persecution he first went to Holland and then to Boston in New England arriving on 26 June 1637 aboard the ship "Hector". Several in his party eventually migrated to the Connecticut Colony, settling in Quinnipiac, which later was named New Haven. Here he died on the 7th of January 1638.
