     The names of the earliest settlers in the area and from whom the author descends are: Sergeant Richard Hildreth of Chelmsford; Major Ephraim Hildreth of Chelmsford and Dracut; Colonel William Reade of Chelmsford, Mass. and Litchfield, N.H.

     Richard Hildreth's name first appears in the records of early Chelmsford with a date of May 10, 1643 as he was made freeman on that date. He settled first at Woburn, then called Charlestown Village. In 1663 he was granted 8 separate lots of land amounting to 105 acres.  He had two wives, both named Elizabeth.  His will was dated Feb. 11, 1686/7
