Henry GUTHAAS/GUTHUNZ (July, 1828 - 14 August 1905) He left Germany at the age of 24, without permission, so there is no immigration record. However, ship's passenger lists show that he arrived at New York on 18 September 1852 aboard the ship "Dublin". The ship had sailed from Havre, France about three weeks earlier. Since he left Europe from France it leads one to believe that he and his wife had left Germany surreptitiously and made their way to America under unconventional circum- stances. The reason for this still being unclear. Family stories related that he left to avoid conscription into the Kaiser's army. Upon arrival at New York, he listed his occupation as "carpenter". He travelled under the name "Guthaas", but on all subsequent records, the name is spelled "Guthunz". They lived briefly in New Jersey. In 1880 his family was living at 174 13th St., St Paul, Minnesota. At that time his occupation was shown as "undertaker" and he owned and operated Guthunz & Son Mortuary. In 1900 their residence was at 250 13th St., St Paul. He and his wife had ten children, seven were still living in 1900. Sources: Genealogical research report of Friedrich R.
