Jasper GRIFFIN, Sr. (1646/8 - 17 April 1718) He immigrated to New England in about 1667 and lived first at Marblehead, Essex Co., Mass. His name appears in the records in 1668 because "he profaned the Lord's day by making bricks". Between 1674 and 1679 he removed to Southhold, on Long Island, New York. There, he held the rank of Major in the militia and placed in charge of two cannon, which were mounted on the banks of the bay on which his farm was located. He fired the cannon on public days, "such as their Majesty's birthdays". He and Hannah had fourteen children, nine who probably died young and of whom, there is no record. He was a brickmaker and stonemason by trade. Sources: "Genealogies of Long Island Families", Vol. I, p.468, "The Griffin Family of Long Island", Donald Lines Jacobus. "The New York Gen. & Bio.
