William CHANDLER, Sr. (1595 - 26 January 1640/1) He immigrated to New England in 1637 and settled in Roxbury. He was a small landed proprietor; poor, and ill with "consumption" much of the time. His trade was given as "housekeeper". He rented rooms in his house to make ends meet. He had a small farm (22 acres) with goats, cows, and pigs. He became a freeman in 1640. It was written about him: "he lived a very religious and godly life... he was a man of weake parts but excellent faith and holiness.. He was poor, but...left a sweet memory and savor behind him." His homestead was located at the southerly corner of what is now Bartlett and Washington Streets in Roxbury, MA. Sources: "The Chandler Family", George Chandler, Worcestor, Mass., 1883.
